Come Hell or High Water by Michele Bardsley
I enjoyed book 6 of The Broken Heart Series. This installment was a little darker than the previous offerings but filled with enough laugh-out-loud moments as to not make it too scary. The author's sarcasm is an art form and this story is full of wit and humor. Phoebe Allen, single mom and vampire, is the manager of the Broken Heart Cafe where she meets short-order cook Connor Ballard who is half Scottish fairy. While her son is visiting Disney World with his human father, undeniable sexual attraction takes over and the couple become mated. What Connor doesn't tell her is that he's also half-demon and before she knows what's happening, she's face to face with a real mother-in-law-from-hell, in the form of his step-mother Lillith. According to Connor , Phoebe is key to keeping his evil mama confined to the underworld. Can Phoebe really trust her demon lover, especially with her heart? This is a frisky adventure. I love demon heroes and Scots so Connor is a twofer! There's just something so sexy about an ultimate bad boy. If you are expecting your favorite residents of Broken Heart you'll be disappointed as much of the action takes place beyond the small town's Invisi-shield. I wished that I could have spent a little more time with the Irish hotties and the sexy, fury German triplets but I liked meeting a whole new cast of characters. It was nice to finally learn more about Phoebe as she hasn't really been spoken of much in past books. I just felt like this could have used something more, it was as if something was missing that I couldn't put my finger on. If you are new to the series or a frequent visitor to the paranormal haven in Oklahoma this is a fun read.
Everybody makes mistakes-and my first one was named Connor, a heart- stealing Scottish hottie. I thought our night together was the beautiful beginning to a love story, which turned out to be my second mistake. I, Phoebe Allen, lifelong Broken Heart resident and vampire, am now mated to a half-demon.
Thankfully Phoebe's four-year-old son Danny is safely away at Disneyworld with his human father. Because Phoebe's right in the middle of major paranormal drama, helping Connor and his rag-tag group of friends retrieve part of an ancient talisman in order to ward off Connor's vicious stepmother, an uber-demon named Lilith. Phoebe swears she isn't falling for any of Connor's demon charm. But still, he's willing to do anything to protect her and prevent demons from storming into Broken Heart. And her undead heart can't resist a bad boy with identity issues...
